Chatsworth Round Up

It was great to be out competing again, and even better to get the older horses out this weekend at Chatsworth. I had all 4 horses doing the advanced/3 star. Tonto was only having his second go at this level and overall he went really nicely. Dressage was settled and he managed to have a go at the two changes which are very much still on a learning curve.

He’s been going really well on the cross country and this weekend was no exception – as he went on he gave me a lovely feel around a decent advanced course, so I am excited for his future and very pleased for long term owners Carol and Veronica. He was a purchase from the Monart sale as a very green four year old so to have him now at Advanced level is very satisfying.

Sparkles and Womble did the 3* and after both doing nice tests Womble had a few hick ups in the showjumping which I am hoping to iron out over the next few weeks. Womble is a bit out of match practice in the show jumping but also on the cross country – he’s not run around a decent track since Burghley 2016 and he got better the further he went around.

Sparkles made the track feel easy cross country and also show jumped well. He is still learning his trade at 3 star level – I just love to ride him cross country as he skips across the ground. So all in all for those boys it was good to just get them out as they have bigger things coming up over the next 6 weeks!

Next it was Alfie’s turn in the first leg of the Event Rider Masters series. After a good dressage (being a little bit unsettled in walk and trot) he went into the showjumping where he jumped very well for just one down and 3 time. Going into the xc we were well down the order so I just gave him a nice ride around and he felt very good. So all being well we will be off to Wiesbaden next week with him for the next leg of the series.

The first leg of the Masters proved to be very competitive and you’ll definitely have to bring out your A game to be in with a shout of being on the podium this year. Another good thing about this weekend was that the rain that was forecast didn’t really come and it was lovely weather to be out at an event.

So until next time, cheers

Bill
