Weston Park

Bill Levett and Natasha VII, Weston Park, April 2016Driving home from Weston, feeling pleased that I was able to get Natty (pictured) and Dotty out and around an advanced track today. With the weather we have had over the last few days I was sure Weston would get cancelled. Surprisingly they went ahead and the ground in all three phases was certainly very soft, but they went to a massive effort to give everyone a chance to get out. The dressage and showjumping arenas were making it particularly difficult for inexperienced horses to do their job but it was a good learning experience for them in some ways.

Alex and Sparkles only did dressage today but as Dotty and Natty are running at Belton next week I really did want to give them a spin round. Alex did a nice test, and I do think he is on the improve, I just need to transfer the marks he is getting at one days into CIC3* form.

Sparkles has been waiting for better ground as we feel he is still only young, and it’s important the runs he does have are good for his confidence and give him experience. I think he is a bit frustrated that he is not getting to run cross country, but with Tattersalls only a couple of months away, I think it won’t be long until he is a busy boy as his main aim this Spring is the CCI2* there.

Overall, taking into consideration the conditions, I thought the girls went very well, and both gave me the feeling that they will end up confident advanced horses. It is quite tough on horses to have to work out of this deep ground, some seem to cope and others just don’t. I thought the cross country course itself was quite challenging with the first water coming after just three fences but, to be fair to Janet Plant, it seemed to flow and jump well to give horses a nice run.

Until next time,

Cheers,

Bill
